What is Biometrics? 생체 인식이란 무엇인가?
The term “Biometrics” is derived from the Greek words Bio meaning life and metric meaning to measure. It became even more common during the COVID 19 pandemic. It refers to the measurement of people’s unique physical characteristics. Biometrics have been mainly used for identification purposes, like passports or travel visas for example. The two main biometric identifiers are physiological characteristics or behavioral characteristics. Physiological identifiers include things like facial recognition, fingerprints, iris recognition or voice recognition. Behavioral identifiers include the unique ways that individuals act. Examples of this include recognition of typing patterns, mouth and finger movement, website and social media engagement patterns, walking gait, and more.

Biometric이란 용어는 life를 의미하는 Bio라는 measure를 의미하는 metric의 그리스어에서 유래한다. COVID 19 대유행 동안 좀 더 일반화되었다. 이것은 사람들의 독특한 신체적 특징(unique physical characteristics)을 측정하는 것을 말한다. Biometrics는, 예를 들면 여권과 여행비자처럼, 주로 신원확인용으로 사용되어왔다. 2개의 주요 생체인식 식별자는 생리학적 특성과 행동 특징이다. 생리학적인 식별자는 안면 인식, 지문, 홍채 인식 또는 음성인식 등이 있다. 행동상의 식별요소는 개인들이 행동하는 독특한 방식을 의미한다. 이러한 사례들로는 키보드 치는 방식, 컴퓨터 마우스와 손가락의 움직임, 웹사이트와 소셜미디어 관여 방식, 걸음걸이 인식 등이 있다.
Authentication by biometric verification is becoming increasingly common. In addition to security, the driving force behind biometric verification has been convenience. This is because there are no passwords to remember or security keys to carry. Some biometric methods, such as measuring the way a person’s walks can happen without direct contact with the person being authenticated. In many cases, biometric data are held in a centralized database. However, in some cases, biometric data are gathered locally. The data are encrypted so that the authentification or identification can be accomplished without direct access to the biometric data.

생체인식 검증을 통한 인증 점점 더 흔해지고 있다. 보안뿐만 아니라, 생체인식 검증 이면의 원동력은 편의성이다. 기억해야 할 비밀번호나, 소지해야 할 보안 키가 없기 때문이다. 어떤 사람의 걸음걸이를 측정하는 것과 같이 일부 생체인식 방법은 진짜인 그 사람과의 직접적인 접촉없이 진행 할 수 있다. 생체인식 정보는 많은 경우 중앙화된 데이타베이스 보관된다. 그러나 어떤 경우에는 생체인식은 지역한정으로(locally) 축적된다. 이런 데이타는 암호화 되어 있어서 생체인식 데이타로의 직접적인 접근 없이 인증이나 신원확인이 이루어질 수 있다.
