[Speaking] Talk about Innovation Schools

An innovation school is an autonomous school with a curriculum focusing on creativity, based on a democratic school management system. The primary goal is to teach students life skills through this educational system.

Our daughter attends an innovation school. Most classes revolve around projects. During Korean classes, the students debate over specific topics. The students each speak their mind, and learn to respect the opinions of others. For social studies, they do research on their town and present the results. In English class, they memorize lines in English and put on a play.

I think students can receive a real-life education this way, rather than getting stressed out over a heavy workload. But since they aren't given as much work as in ordinary schools, I do worry as a parent that they might fall behind academically .

혁신 학교랑 민주적인 학교운영체제를 기반으로 창의적인 교육 과정을 강조하는 자율 학교이다. 이러한 교육 체계를 통해 학생들에게 실제 삶의 역량을 가르쳐주는 것이 주된 목표이다.

우리 딸아이는 혁신 학교를 다니는데, 대부분의 수업이 프로젝트를 중심으로 진행된다. 국어시간에는 특정 주제에 대해서 토론을 한다. 학생들은 각자 자신의 의견을 이야기하고, 다른 사람의 의견을 존중하는 태도를 배운다. 사회 시간에는 자기 동네에 대해서 조사를 하고 그 결과를 발표한다. 영어시간에는 각자 영어 대사를 외워서 연극을 한다. 

학생들이 과도한 학습량에 스트레스를 받는 것보다 이런 방식으로 살아 있는 교육을 받을 수 있다고 생각한다. 하지만 공부를 일반학교 만큼 시키지 않기 때문에, 부모로서 학업에 뒤쳐질 수 있다는 걱정이 들기도 한다.
