The “Seize the Moment” Attitude ‘현실에 충실하라’ 마음가짐
Throughout my life, people have offered me much unsolicited advice. Some say “Ask, and you shall receive” while others say “Hard work and determination are the keys to success.” Finally, there are the people who live by the motto “Seize the Moment.” This last nugget is often oversimplified. It means a lot more than what meets the eye. By definition, to seize the moment is to take full advantage of life’s opportunities whenever and wherever they present themselves. In other words, to live life to one’s full potential. However, I feel this philosophy could be veiwed as being the opposite of letting opportunities pass you by. Or, to put it another way, stop hesitating and doubting.

인생 전반에 걸쳐서 사람들이 오지랖스러운 충고를 많이 해줬다. 어떤 사람들은 “추구해라 그러면 얻을 것이다” 라고 말하는 반면에 다른 이들은 “노력과 투지가 성공의 비결이다”라고 한다. 마지막으로, “Seize the moment 현실에 충실하다”라는 좌우명을 따라 살아가는 사람들도 있다. 이 마지막 부분은 너무 과하게 단순화되는 경우가 많다. 얼핏 보는 것보다 훨씬 더 의미가 있다. 정의에 따르면, Seize the moment는 언제든지 어디에서든지 주어지는 인생의 여러 기회를 최대한 활용하라는 것이다. 달리 말하면, 자신의 잠재력 최대한 발휘해서 삶을 사는 것이다. 하지만 당신 옆의 기회들을 그냥 스쳐 지나가게 하는 것과 반대되는 인생철학으로 보여질 수도 있다고 생각한다. 혹은 다른 게 표현하면, 그만 망설이고 의심하라는 것이다.

When you seize the moment, you grab the opportunities that come with both hands. On top of that, you also create your own opportunities. You take the moment you’re in and make it yours. This is your time, your opportunity, so run with it. The importance of this mentality should not be overlooked. It may sound simple but it’s far from an easy mentality to follow. Like many people, procrastination is a nagging concept in the back of my mind. The online world of social media exacerbates this. So, after all is said and done, the ability to seize the moment is the key to overcome this. It’s also the key to success and is essential to personal growth.

현실에 충실하면 when 다가오는 기회들을 두손으로 거머쥐게 된다. 거기에다가, 스스로 기회를 창출하기도 한다. 당신이 처한 순간(the moment you’re in) 가지고 본인 것으로 만든다(make it yours). 이것은 당신의 시간이고 당신의 기회이니 밀고 나가다. 이런 마음가짐(mentality)의 중요성은 간과되어서는 안된다. 간단한 것처럼 들릴 수도 있지만, 실천하 follow기가 쉬운 사고방식과는 거리가 멀다. 많은 사람들과 마찬가지로, 미루기는 은연 중에 계속 신경쓰이는 생각이다. 소셜미디어의 온라인 세상이 이를 악화시킨다. 결국 다 따지고 보면, 현실에 충실할 수 있는 능력이 이것을 극복하는 열쇠이다. 또한 성공의 열쇠이기도 하고 개인의 성장에 필수적이다.
