안젤쌤: It’s an important holiday that really commemorate those people who helped shape Korea’s history, giving us the life that we get to live now.
현석쌤: Exactly, especially during the Korean War in 1950 and of course, there’s who have served the country and sacrificed. Memorial day is a public holiday in South Korea. It’s observed on June 6th to commemorate those who died during the Korean War and other conflicts. On this day, a memorial ceremony is held at the Seoul National Cemetery. Sirens ring nationwide and people hold silent prayers for one minute. On memorial day, people lay flowers at the graves of the war dead. In addition, it’s common place to dispaly the South Korean flag at home to honor soliders who died serving the country. The flag is flown at half mask mast. Memorial day was first designated in 1956 in the aftermath of Korean War.

현충일은 한국의 국경일이다. 한국 전쟁과 여러 분쟁에서 순국한 분들을 기리기 위해서 6월 6일을 기념한다. 이날은, 국립서울현충원에서 추모식이 거행된다. 묵념의 소리가 전국적으로 울리면, 사람들은 1분간 묵념을 한다. 현충일에는 전쟁 전사자들의 묘지에 헌화한다. 또한, 조국을 지키느라 순국하신 군인들을 기리기 위해서 가정 태극기를 게양하는 것이 흔한 일이다. 국기는 조기로 게양된다. 현충일에 한국 전쟁이 종식된 이후인 1956년에 처음 지정되었다.
The Korean War began on June 25th 1950. Just two weeks later, the United Nations intervened to prevent North Korean forces from capturing all over the South. Eventually, the Soviet and the Chinese backed to North Korea. After large advances on both sides, the war eventually reached a stalmate. In 1953, an armistice was signed that split the peninsular along what is now the demilitarized zone. The Korean War was the first war in which a world organization, the United Nations, played a military role. The war was the major challenge for the United Nations which has come into existence only 5 years earlier.

1950년 6월 25일에 한국전쟁이 발발했다. 정확히 2후에 유엔이 북한군이 남측을 전부 점령하는(capturing) 것을 막기 위해서 개입했다. 결과적으로, 소련과 중국이 북한을 지원했다. 양쪽의 밀고 밀리는 접전 끝에, 전쟁은 교착상태에 빠졌다.1953년에 정전 협정이 체결되었다. 지금 비무장지대라고 알려져 있는 곳을 따라서 반도가 분단이 된다. 한국 전쟁은 국제기구, 즉 유엔이, 군사적인 역할을 했던 첫번째 전쟁이다. 이 전쟁은 불과(only) 5년 전에 만들어진 UN에게는 상당한 큰 도전 과제였다.
