The Meaning of the Korean National Flag 태극기의 의미
Korea’s National Flag is called 태극기. It incorporates red, blue, and black on a white background. Collectively these elements stand for the three components of a nation; the people, the land, and the government. The red and blue circle at the center of the flag symbolizes the people. The solid white background symbolizes the land. And the four sets of black bars or trigrams represent the government. The elements of the flag symbolizes duality of nature. The red and blue circle is called 태극 in Korean. Translated literally this means supreme ultimate. The circle is divided into two parts. The upper red part represents the forces of Yang 양 while the lower and blue part represents the forces of Yin 음.

대한민국 국기는 태극기라고 불린다. 흰색 바탕에 적색과 청색, 검은색으로 이루어져 있다. 이 요소들이 모여서 국가의 3대 구성을 이룬다; 국민, 국토, 정보. 국기의 중앙에 있는 적색과 청색의 원은 국민을 상징한다. 새하얀 바탕은 땅을 의미한다. 4세트된 3단의 검은 막대기는 정부를 의미한다. 국기의 이런 구성요소는 자연의 양면성을 의미한다. 적색/청색 원은 한국어로 태극이라고 부른다. 말 그대로 번역하면, 이것은 궁극이라는 의미이다. 이 원은 두개의 부분으로 나눠진다. 위쪽 붉은 부분은 양의 기운을 상징하는 반면에 아래쪽 파란 부분은 음의 기운을 나타낸다.
Together Yang 양 and Yin 음 signify the perpetually changing opposite yet complementary principles in all aspects of life; light and dark, good and evil, active and passive, masculine and femine, and so on. The thick round parts of each half of the circle represent the beginning of all things. The thin tail sections represent the end. The four black trigrams further convey the idea of duality. The three unbroken lines represent heaven. Opposite that, a set of three broken lines represent Earth. The stages between these two extremes are represented by two lines with a broken line between them signifying fire, and the two broken lines with an unbroken line in the middle signifying water.

양과 음은 삶의 모든 면에서 끊임없이 변화하며 상반되지만 서로 보완해주는 원리를 상징합니다. 빛과 어둠, 선과 악, 능동과 수동, 남성과 여성, 기타 등등. 태극 각 반원의 뚜껍고 둥근 부분은 모든 것의 시작을 나타낸다. 얇은 꼬리 부분은 끝을 상징한다. 4개의 검정 삼단궤는 양면성의 개념을 추가로 전해준다. 3개의 실선(건)은 천국을 상징한다. 반대편에 있는 3개의 점선(곤)은 땅(earth)을 의미한다. 이 양극단 사이의 단계는 2개의 실선과 그 사이에 점선으로 불(리)을 상징하고, 2개의 점선과 중간에 있는 실선으로 물(감)을 의미한다.
