Last month, Saudi Arabia’s soccer authorities announced an audacious plan to transform the game in the kingdom, with hundreds of millions of dollars made available to buy some of the game’s biggest stars. Soccer agents and executives did not waste time wondering about the country’s abysmal human rights record. Instead, the web of intermediaries, fixers and middlemen who operate in the game’s opaque player-trading industry did what it always does when there are deals to be done and money to be made. It got to work. And it did not take long for Saudi Arabia’s bold vision of the future to bear fruit.

2. A National Treasure, Tarnished: Can Britain Fix Its Health Service? 국보가 변색이 되었다. 영국이 이 의료서비스를 복원할 수 있을까?
As it turns 75 this month, the National Health Service, a proud symbol of Britain’s welfare state, is in the deepest crisis of its history: flooded by aging, enfeebled patients; starved of investment in equipment and facilities; and understaffed by doctors and nurses. Interviews over three months with doctors, nurses, patients, hospital administrators and medical analysts depict a system so troubled that some experts warn that the health service is at risk of collapse. Mortality data, exacerbated by long wait times, paints a bleak picture. In 2022, the number of excess deaths rose to one of the highest levels in the past 50 years, and those numbers have kept rising.

NHS는 노령화되고, 쇠약한 환자들이 넘쳐나고, 장비와 시설에 대한 투자가 턱없이 부족하고, 의사와 간호사의 인력이 부족한 상황에 놓여있다. 의사, 간호사, 환자, 병원 관리자, 그리고 의료 분석가은 3개월에 걸쳐 진행한 인터뷰에서 현 시스템이 너무 문제가 많다고 서술하고 일부 전문가들은 의료서비스가 붕괴 위기에 처해 있다고 경고한다. 오랜 대기 시간에 의해 악화된 사망율 데이타는 굉장히 암울한 상황을 보여준다. 2022년, 초과 사망자 수가 지난 50년간 최고 수준으로 증가했고 그 숫자는 계속해서  증가하고 있다.

3. A New Job for Electric Vehicles: Powering Homes During Blackouts 전기 차량의 새로운 업무: 정전된 가정에 전기를 공급하는 것 
Electric grids are increasingly straining and buckling during extreme weather linked to climate change, including in lengthy heat waves, intense storms and devastating floods. Many people have bought generators or home solar and battery systems, often at great expense. To some people, electric vehicles are a better option because they can serve multiple functions. The battery in a Ford F-150 Lightning or the electric Chevrolet Silverado pickup can store a lot more energy than home batteries that are sometimes installed with rooftop solar panels. Pair an electric truck with a home solar system, the thinking goes, and a family could keep the lights on for days or weeks.

긴 폭염과 강한 폭풍 그리고 파괴적인 홍수 등 기후변화와 관련된 극심한 날씨로 전력망이 점점 더 힘들어지고 약해지고 있다. 많이 사람들이 발전기나 가정용 태양광, 밧데리 시스템을 고가에 구입하는 경우가 많다. 그런데 일부 사람들에게는 전기자동차가 여러가지 기능을 수행할 수 있기 때문에 더 나은 선택지이다. Ford F-150 Lightning 나 Chevrolet Silverado 픽업 트럭의 전기차 밧데리는 지붕 태양광 패널에 쓰이는 가정 밧데리보다 훨씬 더 많은 에너지를 저장할 수 있다고 한다. 전기 트럭과 가정용 태양광 시스템을 연결하면, 가정에서는 며칠 또는 몇주 동안 불을 켜 놓을 수도 있다고 이론적으로 생각한다.
