For decades, the world’s dominant powers have benefited from large working-age populations that help drive economic growth. Meanwhile, particularly young populations in much of the developing world have had limited resources to divert to raising children, curbing economic opportunity. But the world’s demographic sweet spots are changing, and fast. Japan had the first major shift: By 2013, a quarter of the population was 65 and older. Much of Western Europe will follow and South Korea, Britain and Eastern Europe will be next, along with China. At the same time, many low-income countries today will have huge prime-age labor forces for the first time.

2. Oil Industry, Venezuela’s Failing Lifeline, Turns More Lethal 악화되고 있는 베네수엘라의 생명줄 석유 산업, 이제는 건강도 위협
Venezuela’s oil industry, which helped transform the country’s fortunes, has been decimated by mismanagement and several years of U.S. sanctions imposed on the country’s authoritarian government. The state-owned oil company has struggled to maintain minimal production, but to do so it has sacrificed basic maintenance and relied on increasingly shoddy equipment that has led to a growing environmental toll, activists say. In El Tejero, a town in an oil-rich eastern region, rain brings down an oily film. Many residents complain of having respiratory diseases such as asthma, which scientists say can be aggravated by emissions from gas flares.

베네수엘라를 부자로 만든 석유 산업이 부실경영과 미국이 수년동안 독재정부에 가한 제재로 인해서 이제는 악화일로를 걷고 있다. 베네수엘라의 국영석유회사는 지금까지 겨우 겨우 최소 생산량을 유지해왔는데, 이를 위해서 기본적인 정비는 손을 놓고 갈수록 조잡한 장비에 기대서 환경피해규모도 커져갔다고 환경운동가들이 주장한다. 석유가 풍부한 동부지역의 엘 테헤로는 비가오면 사방이 기름막에 덮힐 정도라고 한다. 천식을 비롯한 호흡기 질환을 앓는 주민들도 많다. 학자들은 이런 증상이 주변의 가스연소에서 배출되는 물질 때문에 더 악화될 수 있다고 밝혔다.
3. Far Right May Rise as Kingmaker in Spanish Election 스페인 총선에 킹메이커로 부상하는 극우 정당
If Spain’s national elections Sunday turn out as most polls and analysts suggest, mainstream conservatives may come out on top but need allies on the political fringe to govern, ushering the first hard-right party into power since the Franco dictatorship. The potential ascent of that hard-right party, Vox, would bring Spain into the growing ranks of European nations where mainstream conservative parties have partnered with previously taboo forces out of electoral necessity. The mainstream conservative Popular Party, although predicted to come out on top Sunday, is not expected to win a majority in Parliament; Vox is its most likely coalition partner.

일요일 스페인 총선이 대부분의 예상과 분석과 같은 결과가 나올 경우, 중도 우파가 일등을 하겠지만 실제 집권을 위해서는 정치적 변방에 있는 극우 세력과 손을 잡아야 할 것으로 보입니다. 프랑코 독재 정권 이후 처음으로 극우정당이 정권에 참여하는 일이 벌어진다. 이렇게 극우정당인 Vox가 부상할 경우, 중도우파가 선거상 필요하다는 이유로 과거에는 터부시되었던 극우세력과 연정을 이루는 최근 유럽 각국의 경향에 스페인도 합류하게 될 것이다. 스페인의 중도우파 국민당은 일요일 총선에서 승리할 것으로 보이지만 의회 과반을 차지하기는 힘들기 때문에 극우 정당 복스(Vox)와 연립정부를 구성할 가능성이 크다.
