[Speaking] Talk about Revenge Spending
Recently, I saw a news story about throngs of people standing in line early in the morning to buy designer-brand bags at a department store. The urge to spend, repressed for so long by the coronavirus, is erupting all at once.
This phenomenon is called "revenge spending." It refers to the way people splurge on items when their desire to spend money is pent up by external factors. Spending that was discouraged by external factors like diseases or disasters is released all at once as compensation.
Perhaps, that's why sales of big-ticket items from high-end brands are writing new records following the covid-19 outbreak. Its not just expensive items, either. Consumer goods like cosmetic products, clothing, appliances, and furniture are all enjoying a spike in sales.

최근 명품 가방을 구매하기 위해 백화점 앞에서 이른 시간 부터 줄을 서서 기다리는 수많은 인파에 관한 뉴스를 봤다. 코로나로 인해 오랫동안 억눌렸던 소비 욕구가 한꺼번에 분출되고 있는 것이다.
이러한 현상을 '보복소비'라고 한다. 이건 외부 요인에 의해 억눌렸던 소비심리가 소비 폭발로 이어지는 것을 말한다. 질병이나 재난 등의 외부 요인에 의해 위축되었던 소비가 보상심리에 의해 한꺼번에 발산되는 것이다.
아마도, 그래서 코로나 창궐 이후에 명품브랜드의 고가제품들이 전례없는 매출성장을 기록하고 있다. 이것은 단지 비싼 제품들만이 아니다. 화장품, 의류, 기기, 가구와 같은 일반 소비재도 판매량이 급등하고 있다.
