To pay tribute to an athlete with outstanding contributions to a pro sports team, there is a custom of never using that player’s uniform number after he or she retires.	프로스포츠에서 구단에 크게 기여한 선수를 기리기 위해서 은퇴 후에 그 선수의 등 번호를 영구히 사용하지 않은 관습이 있다.
This is referred to as retiring a number. It’s practiced not only in baseball, but also in soccer, basketball, and volleyball.	이와 같은 관습을 영구결번이라고 칭한다. 야구에서 뿐만 아니라, 축구, 농구, 배구에서도 모두 이런 관습이 있다.
Retiring a number can be considered the highest honor that can be given to a pro athlete.	영구 결번은 그 프로선수에게 주어지는 최고의 명예라고 볼 수 있다.
Last year, 김태균 of Hanhwa Eagles decided to call it a career.	작년에 한화이글스의 김태균 선수가 은퇴하기로 결정했다.
His uniform number, 52, was retired.	김태균 선수의 등번호 52번이 영구 결번으로 지정되었다.
It’s was the fourth uniform number to be given that honor by the team.	이글스에서 영구결번된 네번째 등번호였다.
In a special case of retiring a number in the U.S. major league, every team agreed at once to stop using number 42.	미국 메이저 리그에 영구결번에 특이한 사례가 있다. 모든 팀들이 등 번호 42번을 사용하지 않기로 한번에 동의했다.
This was the uniform number of Jackie Robinson, the first African American in major leaguer.	이것은 메이저 리그에서 첫 아프리칸 미국인인 재키 로빈슨의 등번호였다.
