23.05.15.월 “What is the catch?” from Men in Black [Jason’s Movie Moments]

Today’s Movie is the scifi-action-comedy Men in Black.
This movie starts with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones and is about a pair of government agents who police the aliens on Earth. The premise of the movie is that aliens actually live among us on Earth without the general public knowing. The Men in Black are people who do know about the aliens. They make sure that they don’t get out of line or reveal themselves anything crazy or dangerous for the human public.

Tommy Lee Jones is a veteran agent and he is recruiting a new partner as his former partner has kind of gotten too old for the job. Now Jones chooses Will Smith who plays a New York Police officer as his new partner and explains to him that there are a lot of things that you just don’t know because Will Smith didn’t realize there are aliens living among them but he just found out and this is Jones’s way of explaining things to him.

1500 years ago, everybody knew the Earth was the center of the Universe. 500 years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat and 15 minutes ago you knew that people weren’t alone on this planet.
Imagine what you’ll know tomorrow. Then Will Smith asks “What’s the catch?” And what he means by that is because Tommy Lee Jones is trying to recruit him to become his partner. So Will Smith realizing all the information and he says “What’s the catch?” is asking what’s the downside.

Usually If someone’s trying to sell you something, they’re gonna tell you all the good things about something. If I use a car salesman, I’ll tell you. This car runs zero to 60 in 4.5 seconds and it only costs $ 5,000. You’re explaining all the good things but then you might be asked “What is the catch? What are you not telling me? What’s the bad things that you’re hiding from me?” So, he’s asking Tommy Lee Jones in this situation “What’s the catch? What are the bad things about this job?” He later explained that while you can’t tell anybody that you do this. So you’re always working in secret.

Often, when you doubt somebody because they tell you so many positive things and you don’t hear enough negative, then you might want to ask them “What’s the catch? What am I missing? What are you hiding from me?” is what you actually ask. That was fromt the movie “Men in Black.”
